Texas Revolution
Between 1835 and 1836 settlers and Tejanos in Mexican Texas rebelled against the central government and established the independent Republic of Texas.
Overview
American immigrants had settled in Mexican Texas in large numbers, and tensions grew over immigration limits, slavery, and the centralist turn of President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, who abolished the federal constitution. Fighting began at Gonzales in October 1835. In early 1836 Santa Anna led an army into Texas, overwhelming the defenders of the Alamo and executing hundreds of prisoners at Goliad. Texas declared independence on 2 March 1836. On 21 April Sam Houston defeated and captured Santa Anna at San Jacinto. The Republic of Texas existed for nearly a decade before its annexation by the United States in 1845, which led to the Mexican American War.
